goto your windows start menu > all programs > xampp-control > click it
should get this , im on vista o/s
but will be the same (sort of ): highlighted areas press start then visit the links and follow the instructions from the 1st post of this topic

Yes you do. unless you have it to start with windows each time you reboot

I've now clicked the http://localhost/ link and all I get is a white screen with nothing on it......

seems a pain uninstall it and try again,cant hepl with a white screen issue might be worth a look on the xampp website for some faq,s and common problems.
What your systems operating system etc .
have you got anything blocking port 80 or using it on your pc like skype etc ?
