still getting the message, even though I've added the control panel to the list of exceptions in the firewall settings.....

Do you have a router?

maybe it will work try it: add port 80/8080 to your intern ip adress in the router and se if something happens

got quite a way now, but I can't find Apache friends in the start menu...........

if you did not install xampp using the .exe file, you just extracted the files somewhere, read the link a gave you towards the end it will tell you what to do! you have to read a bit before you really understand what you are supposed to do!

Ok, I've found the folder (I think) its called 'htdocs' is that the same folder as 'httpdocs' ?

It also has two files - 'index.php' and 'index.html' when I click the html one there's text saying "It works!"

However I click on this link..

http://localhost/phpbb/install/install.php

and there's an error message.....

htdocs is correct ,now you put a fresh copy of phpBB3 files in htdocs folder and visit
here : http://localhost/phpBB3/index.php

what happens next ?
