This should be doable with jQuery Tools Scrollable. Not sure whether it is worth the effort, however the thing looks a whole lot more universal than the Totem Ticker...

My 2 cents is Subsilver 2 looks nice and has some neat styles but is to much hassle not worth the effort
I thought phpbb was dropping subsilver 2 ? or is that just the support for it ?

No idea what are they doing to to officially. Pretty sure someone will take over if they drop it.
Just to be clear, I mentioned the jQ Tools thing since it looks pretty damn cool, could imagine quite a bit of modding fun with that.
